    Short answer: yes. Seoul is one of the safest major cities in the world for a woman traveling alone, and the crime rate backs that up, not just the vibe. But “safe” doesn’t mean “turn your brain off,” so here’s what actually matters if you’re heading here solo.

    • Low Crime Rates: violent crime is rare. Pickpocketing and petty theft are uncommon enough that locals routinely leave bags and phones on cafe tables to hold a seat.

    Korean culture leans toward respecting personal space, which shows up in how safe the city feels day to day. A couple of things worth knowing:

    • Modest Dress: dressing modestly, especially at temples, helps you blend in and skip unwanted attention.
    • Lost Items: Koreans take lost-and-found seriously. People leave phones and laptops on cafe tables to save seats without thinking twice about it.

    Between the low crime rate and a culture that respects personal space, Seoul is one of the better cities in the world to explore on your own. Take the normal precautions you’d take anywhere, and most women find it welcoming rather than nerve-wracking.

    Wander Insadong’s old streets, get lost in Myeongdong, eat too much at Gwangjang Market. Seoul holds up.

  • The KFDA Isn't the Only One

    On the heels of the news that the Korean FDA is dragging its heels on recalling fish tainted with super-resistant bacteria, the US FDA is finally getting around to recalling and bringing charges against the slaughterhouse and employees depicted in a highly distributed video on the Internet.

    At least the US FDA is doing something about it, even though they admit that much of the meat has already been eaten.

    It does make me wonder, though, with how lax Korean authorities tend to be towards anything Korean. No telling what goes on in the other meat industries, unless SBS does an expose on them.
