Service
Born & Bred keeps showing up on Best Restaurants in Korea lists, and it’s got a Michelin recommendation attached to it. So I went in with two clients, curious whether the beef could actually back up the reputation.
The room had a young, buzzy energy, but the young wait staff seemed to be waiting for someone to tell them what to do instead of just doing it. Not what you expect from a place with this kind of name recognition.
I tried ordering in Korean and got a confused look back, followed by them fetching an English-speaking server. Minor, but it’s the kind of thing that makes you start paying closer attention to everything else.
The wine didn’t help the case either. We had a bottle of Vindoro Primitivo di Manduria San Marzano, a solid choice, but once it was poured, staff took the bottle away and left us flagging someone down every time we needed a refill. Not exactly the seamless service a place like this should be running.
The food itself was fine, nothing wrong with it, but the beef and banchan tasted about the same as what I get regularly in Majang Market, at roughly double the price. Made me wonder how much of the Michelin nod is actually about the omakase gimmick running upstairs rather than what’s happening at the table.
Born & Bred raised its prices without raising the experience to match. It felt closer to a well-lit chain than a Michelin-recommended kitchen. Unless the point is flexing that you ate there, the butcher restaurants in Majang Market get you the same beef, better value, and none of the theater.
