Review Summary:

Spanish tapas and fun wine in the midst of Itaewon

Location: Itaewon
Cuisine: Spanish
Reservations: Taken
Suggested Items: Anything with jamon, the cool wine pouring system
No, not at my house…

I was invited to a press dinner a few weeks ago at Mi Casa, the Spanish restaurant in Itaewon, caddy corner from Three Alleys Pub. I had been reticent in the past to try out the place. My experience with Spanish food in Seoul has been disappointing. But if this evening was any indicator of what they normally have, then I shall return.

We started with serrano ham and pineapple paired with Vilarnau Brut Reserve Rose. Always start with the sparkly. I wouldn’t normally think of serrano paired with pineapple, but yeah, ham and pineapple are a classic combination. Well, when one thinks of Hawaii, at least. I ate a few of these. But I can’t resist Spanish ham.

Next up was some toasted bread with aioli, simple tomatoes, and jalapeno. I ate a few of these as well. There is something to be admired in simplicity.

Here we have salmon marinado enrollado en huevo de Cordoniz. Eggs and smoked salmon with a good appearance of fresh dill. This was paired with a full bodied 2012 Pazo Barrantes Albarino.

More jamon? Why yes, I think I shall. This time the jamon comes draped atop a scallop. Vieras al Jerez. The star of this was the wine pairing–Bodegas Langa Pi. Drinking that after the scallop and jamon made this red wine taste like chocolate, caramel, and toasted marshmallows. But it wasn’t sweet! Weird…

Panceta 17 Horas. A 17-hour sous vide pork. Paired with Bodegas Castona GSM. But at this point, a few of us were asking for more of that Bodegas Langa Pi.

Carrilleras al Pisto. Beef cheeks with wine sauce and fried onions. Gorgeously braised and comforting on a cold evening. Paired with 2011 Bodegas Bilbainas Vina Pomal Crianza, desribed as a table wine. And a fine table wine it was.

Entrecot al Grill. Basically steak and tater with an asparagus thrown in. The steak, of course, was fab, but the potato got some glorious crispiness by being fried in lamb fat. Paired with a hearty 2008 Pagos del Rey Condado de Oriza Reserva.

2014-12-09 21.35.05

For dessert, El Musico. A dessert for musicians after they’ve played. Candied nuts, jellies, fruits. Paired with a desserty Jose Estevez Valdespino El Candado.

The other cool trick they have at Mi Casa is their wine distribution system. You get a card and go up to this wall with a variety of wines behind glass. You insert the card, choose your wine and the amount you want, and it pours it into your glass while deducting the amount from your card. It’s a fun high tech way to experiment with different wines.

… Or just go for more of that Bodegas Langa Pi.
