Myth: Choco Pies were Invented in Korea

May 14, 13 Myth: Choco Pies were Invented in Korea

Posted by in Commentary, Featured, Junk Food & Treats

Everyone’s crazy about Choco Pies in Korea. Even North Koreans are. There is a lot of pride taken in this confectionery. It’s assumed in Korea that the Orion company invented this type of treat. That’s why articles like this irk me.

Nosh of the Day: Poop Bread

Apr 25, 13 Nosh of the Day: Poop Bread

Posted by in Featured, Junk Food & Treats, Street Food

Was giving an all-day private tour yesterday. One of the things we had was Insa-dong’s Ddong Bbang (“Poop Bread”). It’s a lot like IngeoBbang/BungeoBbang (the fish-shaped pastries). It’s a pancake batter cooked in a mold and filled with red beans. Just shaped like a pile of dog poop. The first time I...

Ramyeon for One

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the first post by guest contributor Jenna Collett 라면 for One  I have never seen Ms. Ahn eat alone. I’ve never seen her eat without sharing with the closest available mouth. On any given day I’d be handed a near constant stream of easy-to-share edibles: segments of oranges and tangerines, slices of...

Recipe: Cilantro Kimchi

If you read most Korean food blogs, they will tell you that Koreans don’t eat coriander, aka cilantro. They’ll tell you straight to your face that cilantro and Korean cuisine have never crossed paths before.

As the Ask the Korean blog reported a couple of years ago:

“Korea has never grown cilantro, and cilantro is not a part of Korean cuisine. …

VIPS (pronounced, um, vips) is Korea’s version of Sizzler. It’s a chain steakhouse run by CJ Foodville that has been around since 1997. When I first came to Korea in 2004, it and Outback were the only places to get steak, really. Back then Outback was even better. But over the years Outback really slid in quality while...

There are no casinos in Yeongdeok, but few other places rival the gaudy, hyperreal simulacra of the infamous city in the Nevada desert. Clinging to the buildings on Yeongdeok’s waterfront are giant crustaceans in bright orange armour. The town seems to exist only as a monument to the King Crab, a tribute to the insatiable Korean...

Jan 24, 13 Noryangjin Food Stalls Threatened

Curtis File has written a story for Yonhap about the popular Noryangjin food stalls and the movement by restaurants and convenience stores to kick them out. This may sound familiar to you, as it’s where we posted about the unique Poktanbap “Bomb Rice” (and recipe). It’s one of the coolest street food areas...

Woke up with a bit of a hangover this morning–and late–so I got out the door craving some junk. Taco Bell is next to my subway station. Walking up, I noticed this. Lunch. Decided. And here’s what it looks like in real life. There are ample veggies in the taco. The burrito had the meat with some rice and cheese....

The Growing Fame of Duck in Pumpkin

There is a dish they don’t tell you about in Hansik 101. It is not listed on tourism websites and Korean cookbooks. Whenever an expat stumbles upon it, they are compelled to blog, Instagram and tweet about their newfound treasure. Word spreads, and certain restaurants find themselves frequented by foreigners. The legend of Hobak...
